Dear Supporter:

This is the 105th Anniversary of the YWCA of Central NJ.  The period between 2008 to 2010 was a trying time not only for our country, but also for our agency. With the 2011 reorganization of our board, CEO and key managers the YWCA of Central NJ started regaining ground.  We restored our fitness and child care programs and tripled the total number of people we serve. Our child care enrollment increased by more than 50 percent since January 2011.  With the help of capital grants from several foundations, we were able to purchase fitness equipment at the end of 2011. Our fitness membership roster grew from 0 to 406 since January 2012. This summer also marks the Grand Opening of the YWCA’s Terrace Room Cafe.

In addition to revitalizing old programs, we our expanding our Career Options Center. This spring we started our TWIN Academy, where our Tribute to Women and Industry (TWIN) honorees mentor entry-level women. This summer we will start English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. With the help of capital grants and TWIN funding, we recently setup a new computer lab.   We also recently received a United Way of Northern NJ grant to expand services in Somerset County.  The grant will support our upcoming conference, which will prepare young ladies for college and the workforce.

We were able to make tremendous progress in the past 18 months with the help of program fees, individual donors, government grants, United Way, foundation grants, and our Tribute to Women and Industry (TWIN) corporate sponsors. Foundation grant funding paid for new fitness equipment and several key repairs to our historical building (including our pool and sauna). (Click here to review our list of contributors: Development ).

The YWCA’s mission is eliminating racism and empowering women. We provide services to  residents in Union, Middlesex, and Somerset counties.  We are asking our supporters to donate $105 dollars (or more) in honor of our 105th anniversary.  We are extremely grateful for those who have already contributed.  Donors of $35 or more will be acknowledged on our website (unless the donor requests otherwise) and will be included in our 2012 Annual Report. All donations to our non-profit are tax deductible.

For more information on how to donate, click here Development or contact Dana Wilson (Her contact info is at the top of the press release). We also invite you to schedule an appointment for a tour of our facility. Thank you in advance for your support.

Yours truly,

Dr. Gary Kirkwood, Sr.

US Supreme Court upheld Affordable Care Act

Here are some resources to find out more how yesterday’s important Supreme Court decision will help women and their families have greater access to health care:

Supreme Court of the United States (S.C.O.T.U.S. Blog): http://www.scotusblog.com/2012/06/friday-round-up-132/#more-148051

Excerpt from Obama’s speech on June 28, 2012:

THE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon. Earlier today, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act — the name of the health care reform we passed two years ago. In doing so, they’ve reaffirmed a fundamental principle that here in America — in the wealthiest nation on Earth – no illness or accident should lead to any family’s financial ruin.

I know there will be a lot of discussion today about the politics of all this, about who won and who lost. That’s how these things tend to be viewed here in Washington. But that discussion completely misses the point. Whatever the politics, today’s decision was a victory for people all over this country whose lives will be more secure because of this law and the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold it.

And because this law has a direct impact on so many Americans, I want to take this opportunity to talk about exactly what it means for you.

First, if you’re one of the more than 250 million Americans who already have health insurance, you will keep your health insurance — this law will only make it more secure and more affordable. Insurance companies can no longer impose lifetime limits on the amount of care you receive. They can no longer discriminate against children with preexisting conditions. They can no longer drop your coverage if you get sick. They can no longer jack up your premiums without reason. They are required to provide free preventive care like check-ups and mammograms — a provision that’s already helped 54 million Americans with private insurance. And by this August, nearly 13 million of you will receive a rebate from your insurance company because it spent too much on things like administrative costs and CEO bonuses, and not enough on your health care.

There’s more. Because of the Affordable Care Act, young adults under the age of 26 are able to stay on their parent’s health care plans — a provision that’s already helped 6 million young Americans. And because of the Affordable Care Act, seniors receive a discount on their prescription drugs — a discount that’s already saved more than 5 million seniors on Medicare about $600 each.

All of this is happening because of the Affordable Care Act. These provisions provide common-sense protections for middle class families, and they enjoy broad popular support. And thanks to today’s decision, all of these benefits and protections will continue for Americans who already have health insurance.

Now, if you’re one of the 30 million Americans who don’t yet have health insurance, starting in 2014 this law will offer you an array of quality, affordable, private health insurance plans to choose from. Each state will take the lead in designing their own menu of options, and if states can come up with even better ways of covering more people at the same quality and cost, this law allows them to do that, too. And I’ve asked Congress to help speed up that process, and give states this flexibility in year one.

Once states set up these health insurance marketplaces, known as exchanges, insurance companies will no longer be able to discriminate against any American with a preexisting health condition. They won’t be able to charge you more just because you’re a woman. They won’t be able to bill you into bankruptcy. If you’re sick, you’ll finally have the same chance to get quality, affordable health care as everyone else. And if you can’t afford the premiums, you’ll receive a credit that helps pay for it.

World YWCA Internship Program – 2013 Application Process

Memorandum

DATE: June 29, 2012

TO: YWCA Leadership including, NCB, Regional Leadership Council, Local Associations, Asset Management and Development Committee (AMDC), World Service Council

FROM: Gloria Lau, CEO

SUBJECT: World YWCA Internship Program – 2013 Application Process

Dear YWCA Leadership:

Applications for the World YWCA Internship Program 2013 are now open! Young women leaders of the YWCA movement have an opportunity to participate in the internship program that will place a strong emphasis on advocacy, communication, and young women’s leadership.

The World YWCA Young Women’s Internship Program is intended to increase the number of globally experienced and trained leaders who will return to their associations to share their experiences and learning with their associations, and also to provide leadership for increased and improved understanding of what the world movement is all about. Young women applicants between the ages of 22-30 years, endorsed by their member associations, are invited to apply. The World YWCA actively encourages applications from young women living with HIV.

The one-year Internship Program (January 14 to December 13, 2013) will provide opportunities to develop skills in advocacy, through communications, programs and movement building on the priority themes of violence against women, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and HIV, and young women’s leadership. Internship opportunities will exist in the communications team and program team, with priority given to ensuring interns experience the diversity of the work of the World YWCA.

The internship also represents an excellent opportunity for a young woman interested in the communications field by assisting in a range of communications projects, including media relations, message development, publications, writing articles, updating of website, event management, planning and managing social media.

Other experiences include

  • Training opportunities in leadership development, program development and advocacy work
  • Exposure to the work of international NGOs and UN agencies including representing the World YWCA at UN and international NGO meetings
  • Developing skills in management, team-building, financial development, administration, computer systems and electronic communications
  • Participating in World YWCA global trainings, global platforms and actively participating in NGO working groups, and developing analysis and documentation.

The short-term advocacy and communications internships will provide four young women with the opportunity to participate in important sessions at either the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York, sessions of the CEDAW Committee, the UN Human Rights Council and International Periodic Review in Geneva, and other international events.

Attached is the World YWCA Internship Application Packet. We encourage you to share this information with all young women in your association. All applications must be submitted to the YWCA USA no later than Monday, July 23, 2012.
